![]() An Example of the different types of tests | What was the Dictation Test? It was a 50 word test were you had to write down the words that the officer gave you and if you get it wrong or don’t write it all down, you would be deported to the country where you came from. The passages that were made where sometimes so difficult, that some of the people who spoke English wouldn’t be able to do the test because it was so scientific. Why did they use the Dictation Test? The test was used to keep and non-Britain person out of the Country. It first started out as only being the English Language, then to make it even more difficult, it could be done in any other European Language and if you passed the test, they’d give you the same test in another language, so you would never be able to come into the country unless you were European. Egon Erwin Kisch, a Jewish activist, spoke so many different European languages and all very fluent; the officers tested him in the Scottish Gaelic language and he failed. There was controversy because he protested that it wasn’t a proper language, he was so desperate that he jumped off a ship 5 metres from the dock and as he landed on the dock, he broke his leg and was taken to custody and sentenced to prison in Britain. |
